Doom Detox, Day 1
Let´s start our 7-day series to disrupt your doom loop, deconstruct your habits, and de-doom your daily life.
Welcome to Day 1: Parade!
I am so glad you´re here.
Each video in this series is under 5 minutes and offers a technique or an area of focus to help you find balance and start building resilience.
You don´t have to do ALL of these practices, but each one will give you a different way to re-center yourself.
Let´s get started. (And don´t worry—my hands only look purple due to the shift in lighting. Welcome to Amsterdam´s changeable weather! ☀️🌥️☁️)
This is such a simple tip, but getting in the habit of shifting our perspective this way can dramatically reduce our anxiety about all that´s happening.
Jan, a teacher in the U.S., recently told me she uses this tip daily:
¨Oh, definitely it´s the parade one for me. I use it as I watch the news or feel myself going into that doom spiral.
Stepping back (sometimes literally as well as figuratively) from the news feed has helped me so much.
I even use the parade practice in my grade 5 classroom, and have a fun story to share.
We do the parade each morning, followed by a brief sharing about the thoughts and emotions we watched.
One day, I forgot to lead the parade practice, and a student said, ´Wait, Ms. P., we need to watch the clowns first!´ Well, everyone thought that was hilarious, including me, so now we all call it ´watching the clowns´. And it has become such a favorite that we now do it twice a day!¨
I love this idea of watching clowns! See how it feels to give yourself this gift.

New here? Welcome!
In case this is your first time hearing from me, here´s a bit of background:
I am a creative disruptor and adaptation activist who has been helping people get calm, clear, and creative for over 20 years.
My playful, eyes-wide-open approach to everyday awareness was featured in over 150 media outlets around the world, from Woman´s Day to WIRED, Parents to Penthouse.
My book, The New Global Student, was published in 2009 (Crown/Random House) and served as the go-to guide for U.S. students and their parents looking for accessible, affordable, and thrilling alternatives to the traditional path through high school and college. For the next few years, I coached individuals, couples, and families as they created exciting learning adventures abroad.
When the pandemic hit, I helped women in 18 countries who were facing the devastating loss of their loved ones and becoming the sole breadwinners for their extended families. In just three months, every woman was able to learn skills to help them cope, reach new levels of creativity, and build a fulfilling project that supported their loved ones.
These days, I help collapse-aware leaders, thinkers, and dreamers come to terms with our colliding crises. Together, we turn their despair about the world into grounded gratitude, rewilded imagination, and bold action…in 30 days.

It’s mindfullness, right? One doesn’t have to engage with one’s emotions, one can just observe them, let them happen, let them pass, without latching on to them. News is all about triggering fear and outrage. Don’t let them.
Great technique. Reminds me of the book Untethered Soul.
